My Take on the FMI AFM Accreditation
The Advanced Financial Modeler (AFM) program is one of my favorite programs even though it is not focused on FP&A. It is focused on a key skill every FP&A professional needs and that is financial modeling. I originally signed up for the program in 2020 and then COVID hit so I delayed it until 2024. I found I became a better modeler by completing the study resources in preparation for the AFM.
Unlike multiple-choice exams, the AFM requires you to actually build an integrated 3-statement model from scratch in a 4-hour proctored exam. That’s what makes it so credible — you have to demonstrate real, hands-on modeling skills under time pressure. I often recommend to people who want to get into FP&A and need modeling skills to take the AFM and then supplement it with some FP&A courses vs doing a full certification. Again, this resource is not for everyone but is a great accreditation at a very reasonable price.
Bottom Line: I strongly believe every modeler needs to demonstrate they are a qualified financial modeler, and one of the best ways to do that is through the FMI program. Earning the accreditation will demonstrate to your current and future employers that you are serious about financial modeling. Use code Podcast at fminstitute.com/podcast to save 15%.

Things to Remember
No program is perfect. Here are the areas to keep in mind as you evaluate the AFM:
- This is not an FP&A certification but a modeling certification, so the program has a narrow focus. It is 100% about financial modeling.
- Limited awareness compared to more traditional finance certifications like CFA or CPA.
- No continuing education credits required to remain certified.
AFM vs. Other Programs
| Program | Price | Format | Duration | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FMI AFM | $616 (with code) | 4-hour proctored hands-on exam | 50–100 hours prep | Proving modeling proficiency, employer recognition |
| CFI FMVA | $348/year | Self-paced online courses + exam | 3–6 months | Learning modeling, broad content library |
| Wharton Online / WSP | $4,700 (with code) | Cohort-based with office hours | 8 weeks | FP&A focus, prestige, networking |
| AFP FPAC | $875+ | Multiple-choice + simulation exam | 6–12 months | FP&A credentialed certification |
Value Perspective: At $616 with the Podcast code, the AFM is a great accreditation at a very reasonable price. Unlike training-only programs, the AFM validates that you can actually build a model under real conditions. That kind of employer recognition makes the ROI clear.
Who Should Pursue the AFM?

❌ Consider Alternatives If You:
- Are a complete beginner (consider FMI Foundations first)

Time Commitment & Exam Schedule
FMI recommends 50–100 hours of preparation. In practice, this means 2–4 months of consistent study alongside full-time work. The AFM exam is offered four times per year — check fminstitute.com for current exam dates. You have one year from enrollment to sit for the exam.
Pro Tip: Practice building complete models from scratch multiple times before exam day. Time yourself and aim to get your full build down well under 4 hours to leave buffer time. Familiarize yourself with the proctoring software using FMI’s practice session. The exam tests not just knowledge but speed, accuracy, and model design quality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the FMI AFM worth the investment?
Yes, especially if you build or review financial models in your work. Unlike multiple-choice exams, the AFM proves you can actually build a model under real conditions. At $616 with the discount code, it’s one of the most affordable and credible accreditations in finance. That said, this resource is not for everyone — it is narrowly focused on financial modeling, not broader FP&A skills.
What makes the AFM different from other modeling certifications?
Most certifications use multiple-choice questions. The AFM requires you to build a complete integrated 3-statement model from scratch in Excel during a 4-hour proctored exam. Your model is then reviewed and graded by expert modelers. This hands-on approach is why it’s considered the gold standard for demonstrating modeling proficiency.
Are there prerequisites for the AFM?
No formal prerequisites. The AFM is open to all levels. However, you need solid Excel skills and a working understanding of financial statements. If you’re a complete beginner, consider starting with FMI Foundations in Financial Modeling first.
How should I prepare for the AFM exam?
FMI provides self-study learning resources including 60+ videos with 10+ hours of content when you enroll. Plan for 50–100 hours of preparation. The key is practicing building complete 3-statement models from scratch under time pressure. Time yourself to ensure you can finish well within 4 hours.
I want to get into FP&A — is the AFM the right choice?
I often recommend to people who want to get into FP&A and need modeling skills to take the AFM and then supplement it with some FP&A courses vs doing a full certification. The AFM builds a critical skill, and pairing it with FP&A training gives you a strong foundation.
Can I take the exam from home?
Yes. The AFM exam is proctored online and taken from your home or office computer. You’ll need a reliable internet connection and Microsoft Excel. FMI provides a proctoring practice session so you can test your setup beforehand.
What happens after I earn the AFM?
You gain the AFM designation, a digital badge, and are listed in the FMI Accreditation Directory. You also get access to the FMI Community. The AFM is the gateway to the CFM (Chartered Financial Modeler), which is a more advanced and challenging program for experienced modelers.
