My Take on the FMI AFM Accreditation
The Advanced Financial Modeler (AFM) program is one of my favorite programs even though it is not focused on FP&A. It is focused on a key skill every FP&A professional needs and that is financial modeling. I originally signed up for the program in 2020 and then COVID hit so I delayed it until 2024. I found I became a better modeler by completing the study resources in preparation for the AFM.
Unlike multiple-choice exams, the AFM requires you to actually build an integrated 3-statement model from scratch in a 4-hour proctored exam. That’s what makes it so credible — you have to demonstrate real, hands-on modeling skills under time pressure. I often recommend to people who want to get into FP&A and need modeling skills to take the AFM and then supplement it with some FP&A courses vs doing a full certification. Again, this resource is not for everyone but is a great accreditation at a very reasonable price.
Bottom Line: I strongly believe every modeler needs to demonstrate they are a qualified financial modeler, and one of the best ways to do that is through the FMI program. Earning the accreditation will demonstrate to your current and future employers that you are serious about financial modeling. Use code Podcast at fminstitute.com/podcast to save 15%.

Things to Remember
No program is perfect. Here are the areas to keep in mind as you evaluate the AFM:
- This is not an FP&A certification but a modeling certification, so the program has a narrow focus. It is 100% about financial modeling.
- Limited awareness compared to more traditional finance certifications like CFA or CPA.
- No continuing education credits required to remain certified.
AFM vs. Other Programs
| Program | Price | Format | Duration | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FMI AFM | $616 (with code) | 4-hour proctored hands-on exam | 50–100 hours prep | Proving modeling proficiency, employer recognition |
| CFI FPAP | $348/year | Self-paced online courses + exam | 3–6 months | Learning modeling, broad content library |
| Wharton Online / WSP | $4,700 (with code) | Cohort-based with office hours | 8 weeks | FP&A focus, prestige, networking |
| AFP FPAC | $875+ | Multiple-choice + simulation exam | 6–12 months | FP&A credentialed certification |
Value Perspective: At $616 with the Podcast code, the AFM is a great accreditation at a very reasonable price. Unlike training-only programs, the AFM validates that you can actually build a model under real conditions. That kind of employer recognition makes the ROI clear.
Who Should Pursue the AFM?
Perfect Fit If You:
- Want to validate your financial modeling skills
- Build or review financial models in your role
- Want to prove you can build a model under real conditions, not just answer multiple-choice questions
- Want an affordable, credible, modeling-specific accreditation
- Have solid Excel skills and understand the 3 financial statements
- Are aiming toward the CFM (Chartered Financial Modeler) down the road
Not the Right Fit If You:
- Are new to Excel or financial statements (start with FMI Foundations first)
- Want broad FP&A training (budgeting, forecasting, business partnering), not just modeling
- Prefer a multiple-choice, theory-based exam
- Won't set aside 50 to 100 hours to practice building models
- Want a live, instructor-led cohort experience
- Are after a general finance credential rather than a modeling-specific one
